The Orthodox view of death

COURSE DESCRIPTION

According to the teaching of Holy Scripture and the Fathers of the Church, death does not come from God. God neither made death nor rejoices over the perdition of the living. The cause of the entry of death into the world lies in the misuse of our self-determination when we were tempted by the devil to distance ourselves from God, the source of Life. Death was the culmination of the disastrous consequences of the sin of our first ancestors. God did not prevent death but incorporated it into his plan for our salvation. The repercussions of the decision of our first ancestors were devastating for the whole of humankind. Severance of communion with God mortified our spiritual senses and led to spiritual death. This was followed by the death of the body. The death of the body, however, did not occur at the moment of disobedience. The depth of God’s mercy and wisdom postponed it for the future so that humankind would not fall into despair. According to the teaching of the Church, death comes in three forms, spiritual, bodily, and, finally, eternal. Spiritual death occurs immediately, once the person has sinned and is, in fact, the disruption of communion with God. Bodily death is natural, biological death, in which the soul is separated from the body. Finally, eternal death is seen as the inevitable, everlasting state of those who sin.
