COURSE DESCRIPTION
The content of this unit is the teaching, contained in the Holy Scripture and the experience of the Fathers of the Church, concerning the Devil and the Demons- their creation and fall, their properties, their number and names, their tasks and machinations- and also the ways in which we can deal with them. Here follows, then, a brief summary of the teaching of the Church on the evil spirits. Aside from any theoretical and moral view of good and evil, the Biblical and Patristic tradition speaks of God’s wicked opponent and the enemy of humankind.
It is the devil, in whom there is only negation and who destroys and mortifies everything, because he is the spirit of mortification, by the expulsion of real life. In the Orthodox tradition, the devil is not the personification of the passions, but a person created by God as an angel, who, after his loss of communion with Him, became a dark spirit, the devil.
The mystery of iniquity was activated in history and the devil has continued to generate evil and perform his destructive tasks since the Church first became established. The notion of sin is also linked to the devil. The essence of sin lies in our disposition to ignore God and to place ourselves in the position of Him. Sin is not restricted to any isolated actions, thoughts, activities, and desires of ours, but is a more general state which is expressed through all of the above, though is not exhausted by them.
