COURSE DESCRIPTION
Those who are baptized become members of the Church and are called disciples of Christ, Christians. In Orthodoxy, we add the epithet ‘Orthodox’ in order to show the correctness of the faith which we observe. The members of the Church were called Christians because they followed Christ in His life and teaching, that is they are united with Him in the Holy Sacraments and the commandments. According to the faith and teaching of the Church, God became a human person, without losing His Divinity, in order to redeem us from sin and death and to bring us back to the original purpose of the creation, that is our immortality and similarity to God. People have always longed for immortality and liberation from evil. This is why they awaited a Redeemer.
They retained the memory of a life of bliss, while simultaneously experiencing the tragic nature of life, with death, illnesses, wars, hatred among people, and so on. The Redeemer whom all ages and all people were awaiting is Christ. In His person, He united God and humans. He was born from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary. His conception and birth were godly and miraculous. We are called Christians because we believe that He is the true God and that His commandments are truths that illumine our personal and social life.
This is why we attempt to align our life and outlook with His own humble aspect and His holy life. Christ did not come merely to change the externals of our life, but to sanctify us, to transfigure us, to deify us, to make us children of God by Grace. He Himself is the natural Son of God, while we must become children of God by Grace (by adoption). We experience this great work of God in the Church.
Through the sacrament of Baptism, we become members of the Body of Christ, and through the sacrament of the Divine Eucharist we are nourished spiritually and experience in our own personal and social life the Passion, the Cross, the Tomb, and the Resurrection. We are therefore disciples of Christ because we are united with him.
